CHAPTER ELEVEN

Gianna sat at the breakfast nook with a cup of coffee and stared out the window, watching the sun rise over the horizon. Usually she slept until about mid-morning. However, her mind wouldn’t stop churning over the ideas for the festival she and the other women were organizing.

“You’re up early.” Azar kissed her forehead then drifted to the coffee maker.

“Morning. I couldn’t sleep anymore.” She admired his bare back and how his shorts rested on his hips. He was so sexy in the morning. Well, any time of the day.

“You should had woken me.” He waggled his brows as he poured his coffee.

She hid her smile behind her coffee cup. “I thought about it. Then you looked so peaceful, I figured I’d let you sleep.”

“Hmm.” He sipped his coffee and studied her. “I’m not sure if that is nice or cruel of you.”

She laughed. “I don’t have a cruel bone in my body.”

He raised a brow as if challenging her. Or maybe he didn’t believe her. “That may be true, but I have a feeling that you can protect yourself if you need to.”

“I can. I’ve taken self-defense classes as well as other martial art training.”

He sat across from her, staring at her with one corner of his mouth lifted. She wondered what he was thinking. Then his expression turned serious. “Was there a reason you needed to defend yourself?”

She shook her head. “No. After my mom fell ill, I just needed something to do.”

A lump formed in her throat and she stared out the window. Azar reached across and took her hand. “Sorry about your mom.”

Blinking away the tears, she took another sip of her coffee. “It’s okay. She stopped recognizing me a few years ago. Then a couple months before I was contacted about the surrogate program, Mom refused to see me. Her nurses said she would get confused and really upset when I visited.”

He frowned. “I couldn’t imagine what it was like.”

She met his stare. “Anyway, do you have anything specific planned for today?”

He pressed his lips together, and for moment, she thought he was going to argue about her changing the subject. She was relieved when he didn’t. “I have a few things to take care of in the office and then I’m all yours this afternoon.”

She loved the idea of spending the afternoon with Azar. “That sounds great. While you’re working, I’ll be in the library doing some research, that way if I have questions, I can ask you later.”

She lifted the cup to her lips just as Voss entered the kitchen. His long silver hair was braided down his back. He wore a baby blue button-down shirt and black slacks. “Good morning.”

A crooked smile lifted his lips and he bent down to place a kiss on hers. “Morning. “His smile vanished, and he drew his brows together. “I’ll be gone all day.”

“It’s okay. I was going to research and then I can pick Azar’s brain on the type of festival we’ll have.”

“This whole idea has me a little nervous.
